Indiana University School of Medicine recruits Dr. Gutmann as Chair, Department of Neurology
The Indiana University School of Medicine has recruited Dr. Laurie Gutmann as chair for the Department of Neurology. She will serve as co-director of the Neuroscience Institute, an umbrella entity designed to facilitate collaboration among neuroscience disciplines at IU School of Medicine and IU Health.
Gutmann brings clinical, research, education and administrative experience to the role and has demonstrated strong leadership abilities as vice chair of clinical research and director of the Neurology Office of Clinical Trials for the Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa, along with serving as associate director of clinical research for the Iowa Neuroscience Institute.
Her leadership on the national level includes serving eight years as a director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, including three years as chair of the Neurology Council, and serving on the Neurology Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, chairing the committee for the last three years. Working with a diverse group of colleagues, Gutmann helped revise the Neurology Program requirements for the ACGME, and she has led or participated in several initiatives for the American Academy of Neurology encompassing workforce development, women’s leadership and educational programs.
Previously, Gutmann served as a program officer for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health and was faculty at West Virginia University and at University of Iowa. Her work helped build a multidisciplinary stroke research program at West Virginia and the multidisciplinary Myotonic Dystrophy Clinic and funded myotonic dystrophy research program at Iowa. She has been co-principal investigator on an NINDS site infrastructure grant for early clinical trials in rare neurological disorders. She also developed the Neurology Office of Clinical Trials at Iowa which is now self-sustaining and supports over 60 clinical trials. Additionally, Gutmann and three collaborators developed an NINDS-funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course which trains up to 30 new clinical trial investigators a year.
Gutmann earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in biology from Oberlin College in Ohio and her medical degree from West Virginia University Medical School. She completed a transitional year residency at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, and her neurology residency at University of Virginia, where she continued her training as a Neuromuscular Diseases/EMG Fellow.
Gutmann will be following Robert Pascuzzi, MD in the position of chair. Pascuzzi served for 16 years as leader of the department, and will be continuing on as a faculty member.

Dr. Laurie Gutmann to the AUPN as the newly appointed Chair of the Department of Neurology and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute at Indiana University. Dr. Gutmann replaces Dr. Bob Pascuzzi, long-time Chair and past AUPN Council Member. She previously served as Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Director of the Office of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa, as Associate Director of Clinical Research for the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, and as the founder of the Iowa Myotonic Dystrophy Research Center.
She has been a national leader in neurology for many years, including service as a Director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and as Chair of the Neurology Council of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, where she was instrumental in revising the Neurology Residency Training Program accreditation requirements. In addition, she was a program officer for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health, where she played a key role in creating the outstanding NINDS-funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course, which trains up to 30 new clinical trial investigators a year, as well as helping to lead an NINDS site infrastructure grant for early clinical trials in rare neurological disorders through NeuroNEXT.

Dr. Gutmann is a NeuroNEXT PI for the University of Iowa and has been involved in the NeuroNEXT site management/ site support group for the CCC. She received a BA from Oberlin College, her MD from West Virginia University School of Medicine, and did her Neurology Residency and Neuromuscular/EMG Fellowship at University of Virginia. She was a faculty member of the West Virginia University School of Medicine for 20 years and is currently Professor of Neurology at the University of Iowa. She has board certification in neurology, clinical neurophysiology, vascular neurology, and neuromuscular medicine. Dr. Gutmann has had long-standing clinical trials experience beginning at WVU, enhanced by her four years of experience in the extramural clinical trials program at NINDS/NIH. She served there as program officer for several U01 trials, was a consultant for Coriell Repository, and was actively involved in the Office of Clinical Research activities. She was the Medical Director of the WVU Stroke Center, clinical neurophysiology fellowship and residency program director, and director of the MDA/ALS clinic. She is currently a member of the University of Iowa neuromuscular research division and director of the Myotonic Dystrophy Clinic. She is coPI of the NINDS Clinical Trials Methodology Course and Associate Director of Workforce Development for the University of Iowa Institute of Clinical and Translational Studies. She is vice chair of the AAN Education committee, chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee and serves as a director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
