Dr. Michael L. Good, renowned inventor, anesthesiologist, and healthcare executive appointed to lead U. of Utah School of Medicine
On June 27, 2018, the University of Utah Present Ruth V. Watkins announced the appointment of Dr. Michael L. Good as the new Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, CEO of University of Utah Health, and executive dean for the U’s School of Medicine. Dr. Good is a renowned inventor, anesthesiologist and administrator that was recruited to the University of Utah after serving as the dean for the UF College of Medicine.
“Dr. Good is a widely respected leader and administrator with extensive experience managing the complementary missions of clinical care, education and research that are the essential components of academic medicine,” said Watkins. “Mike shares my vision that a public university should serve as a catalyst for improving the human condition and should strive to improve the community it serves. I look forward to collaborating with him in the years ahead.”
The announcement marks the successful completion of the U’s national executive search for a new leader to take the health system in an exciting new direction. Dr. Good will take the place of Dr. Vivian Lee, former head of health sciences and dean of the medical school, following her departure in 2016. Dr. Good was one of 3 finalists considered for the role, the finalists were announced in early June as:
• Dr. Derek Angus, chairman of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
• Dr. Michael Lowell Good, dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine.
• John G. Hunter, executive vice president and CEO of the Oregon Health and Science University Health System.
Michael L. Good, MD
Good, whose medical speciality is anesthesiology, earned his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He performed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine followed by a fellowship there.
In addition to serving as dean of the University of Florida’s College of Medicine, he is a distinguished professor in the Department of Anesthesiology.
