Dr. Karen Murphy is hired by Geisinger as Chief Innovative Officer

Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA has named Karen Murphy, RN, PhD executive vice president, chief innovative officer and founding director of its Steele Institute for Healthcare Innovation.

In her new role, Murphy will lead the institute’s team, working to transform healthcare delivery by improving patient experience, quality, efficiency, and outcomes.

Murphy, a registered nurse, is currently the secretary of health in Pennsylvania. She has spent her time as secretary battling the opioid epidemic and has launched a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program for the state. In addition, she has put in place the state’s medical marijuana program. Prior to her role as Pennsylvania’s health secretary, she was the director of the CMS’ $900 million State Innovation Models Initiative. Earlier, she was CEO of the Moses Taylor Health Care System based in Scranton, PA.

Dr. Murphy holds a PhD in business administration from Temple University Fox School of Business in Philadelphia, PA and an MBA degree from Marywood University in Scranton, PA.

Dr. Murphy will step down as secretary on June 30 and start her new role at Geisinger in September.

“I’m looking forward to joining the organization,” Murphy said. “Throughout my entire career, I have always focused on transforming healthcare delivery and innovation, and I believe this is a continuation of that work.”
