Krishnankutty (Krish) Sathian, MD, PhD will be appointed as the new chair of the Department of Neurology for Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, effective July 1, 2017.
Dr. Sathian will replace Dr. David Good, the longtime chair of neurology, who stepped down last fall. Dr. Good will continue to serve as a staff physician and professor of neurology.
Sathian currently serves as the Director of the Neurorehabilitation Program, the Medical Director of the Center for Systems Imaging, and a Professor of Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine and Psychology at Emory University. He received the Albert Levy Award in 2001 for the best scientific publication by a faculty member at Emory. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Atlanta VAMC Rehabilitation R&D Center for Visual and Neurocognitive Rehabilitation (CVNR) and the President of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation. Dr. Sathian is a neurologist and neuroscientist interested in multisensory perception, the neural basis of metaphor and cognitive neurorehabilitation.
Upon graduating as the class valedictorian at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, he obtained his doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Sathian moved to the United States for postdoctoral training at Washington University in Missouri, then completed a residency in neurology at the University of Chicago. He joined the Emory University faculty in 1994.
Since 1995, Dr. Sathian’s research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also received funds from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and private foundations.
