University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has announced Joseph Cheng, MD as the new Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Cheng will join the University of Cincinnati following his service as Professor and Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.
In his new position, Dr. Cheng will primarily focus on improving postgraduate education. He also hopes to foster increased collaboration between clinical and basic science departments, specifically seeking to boost interaction between neurosurgery and other neuroscience disciplines. The school’s neurosurgery program will focus on neurotrauma, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, adult brain tumor surgery, functional neurosurgery and complex spinal disease.
Dr. Cheng specializes in treating degenerative disease, deformities, trauma, tumors and spinal cord injury. His primary research interests include health policy, spinal biomechanics, spinal motion modeling, bone healing properties, spinal reconstruction and instrumentation as well as minimally invasive spinal techniques.
Dr. Cheng previously served on the North American Spine Society’s board of directors in 2013 and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons’ board of directors from 2012 to 2013. He completed his neurosurgical complex spine fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
