Yesterday, the University of Pennsylvania’s President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price announced the appointment of Jay Gottfried M.D., Ph.D. as the eighteenth Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor, effective July 1, 2017.
Gottfried will also be the Arthur H. Rubenstein University Professor, with joint faculty positions in the Perelman School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology and the School of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychology.
Gottfried, a world-renowned physician scientist, studies how odor perception functions and integrates into the larger neural system. He uses a combination of techniques including high-resolution olfactory functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), multivariate statistical analyses, psychophysical paradigms, and physiological recordings to investigate how learning, memory, and experiences modulate odor perception at the neural and behavioral levels.
“Jay Gottfried is a pioneer in research that is unlocking mysteries of our sense of smell. His pathbreaking work already has brought important new insights into the neuroscience of smell by taking a boldly interdisciplinary approach to understand the broad range of physical and psychological dimensions of the phenomenon,” said Penn President Amy Gutmann said in a statement released by the university.
“Jay’s research has tremendously exciting implications across many disciplines, not only within the Perelman School of Medicine and the School of Arts and Sciences where he will hold faculty appointments, but extending also to Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Annenberg School for Communication. This kind of integrated knowledge and discovery defines the work of our PIK University Professors. We are delighted to welcome Jay back to Penn, where he previously served a noteworthy residency in Adult Neurology.”
Gottfried is a board-certified neurologist who acquired his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University and subsequently completed a residency in neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2001 he received a Physician-Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that led him to study the neural underlying of odor perception under Professor Ray Dolan at the University College of London, UK. He currently serves as a Professor of Neurology with a secondary appointment in the Department of Psychology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
