01 May, 2024

Dr. Eldon Loh has been named the Earl Russell Chair in Pain Management at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, for the term from May 1, 2024, to April 30, 2029.

Dr. Loh’s educational journey began with an Honour’s Bachelor of Science in Philosophy (SMC) and Human Biology from the University of Toronto in 2001, followed by his MD from Western University in 2005. He pursued his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Alberta, attaining his fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2010. Following this, Dr. Loh honed his expertise in interventional pain management through a clinical fellowship at Healthpointe Medical Centres in Edmonton, Alberta. He joined the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 2011.

Currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and an Associate Scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute, Dr. Loh serves as the Medical Director of both the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Regional Rehabilitation Program and the PMR Clinical Research Unit (PRCRU). He leads the international committee formulating pain guidelines for the Paralyzed Veterans of America and is the chair of the CanPainSCI CPG, pioneering the first Canadian guidelines on managing neuropathic pain post-SCI. Dr. Loh has also chaired the Research Committee for the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Loh and his team have garnered significant accolades for their contributions to interventional pain medicine, including receiving a high-impact paper award at the 2022 International Spine and Pain Intervention Society annual meeting. Notably, two of his recent research publications were highlighted as cover articles and editor’s choice in Pain Medicine in May 2023 and January 2024, respectively, with the team also winning the Best of Pain Medicine 2023 Editor’s Choice award for their groundbreaking research on lumbar radiofrequency ablation.

Dr. Loh’s research focuses on improving chronic neuropathic pain management following spinal cord injuries and pioneering advanced interventional pain management techniques. His research emphasizes translating lab findings into clinical applications by merging anatomical knowledge, which has led to transformative insights into the anatomical bases of pain interventions, challenging established beliefs. His studies also explore the efficacy of various interventional techniques like radiofrequency ablation and paravertebral nerve blocks within Ontario’s healthcare system.
