The Board of Directors of the Kaiser Permanente’s Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) in Pasadena announced Tuesday it has named Dr. John L. Dalrymple as the new Dean and CEO.
Dr. Dalrymple, known for his pioneering work in championing inclusivity and diversity in medical education, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to guide the school into the future. He begins his service as Dean and CEO on July 1.
Dr. Dalrymple’s appointment follows an extensive national search for a new Dean and CEO. His background as a senior associate dean for Medical Education at Harvard Medical School and his tenure at prestigious institutions such as Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center underscore his deep understanding of academic leadership and medical practice.
“Dr. Dalrymple’s dedication to championing inclusivity and diversity in medical education and the health profession will inspire and empower our faculty, staff, and students to continue shaping the future of medical education and healthcare delivery,” Dr. Holly Humphrey, chair of the KPSOM board of directors, said.
Dr. Dalrymple received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and has been in practice for more than 20 years as an obstetrician-gynecologist. He served as the Senior Associate dean for Medical Education at Harvard Medical School and held the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Professorship in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology and Medical Education. He also served as executive vice chair and vice chair for faculty development and faculty affairs within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Dr. Dalrymple has won numerous teaching awards at each of the schools where he has served on the faculty in both the University of Texas and University of California Health Systems. He has served in a variety of academic and educational leadership roles, including clerkship and course director, vice-chair for education, director of curriculum affairs, director of clinical skills education, and division director.

Dr. Dalrymple succeeds Founding Dean and CEO Dr. Mark Schuster, whose legacy in health systems science and research will continue as he assumes a professorship at KPSOM.
The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, whose inaugural class of 50 students started in July 2020, is renowned for its commitment to providing an outstanding medical education. Through its pillars of Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, and Health Systems Science, the school prepares future physicians to advocate for better health outcomes and drive transformation in healthcare delivery.
