The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Hae Won Shin, MD, as the Chair of the Department of Neurology and Semmes-Murphey Professor of Excellence at the College of Medicine. Dr. Shin, who recently joined UTHSC from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center’s School of Medicine, brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to enhancing epilepsy care and surgery outcomes.
In her previous roles, Dr. Shin has significantly contributed to the advancement of patient care, particularly in the field of epilepsy. She has been instrumental in developing ACGME-accredited epilepsy fellowships, providing comprehensive and advanced epilepsy care using new epilepsy surgery and neuromodulation therapies. Dr. Shin’s clinical care and research focus on improving epilepsy care and surgery outcomes, aligning with UTHSC’s mission to provide the best care to patients in Memphis and throughout Tennessee.
Dr. Shin’s vision for the Department of Neurology includes building up the department’s educational, clinical care, and outreach programs, and expanding its research portfolio. She emphasizes the importance of wellness, collaboration, diversity, and shared governance within the department, aiming to foster a community where everyone contributes to its success.
Dr. Shin earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ewha Womans University in Seoul and a Bachelor of Science in Premedicine from Pennsylvania State University. She received her medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed her neurology residency and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
