UW School of Medicine and Public Health welcomes new Vascular Surgery Division Chair

Dr. John Rectenwald selected as UW’s New Chair of Vascular Surgery

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health has announced Dr. John Rectenwald, MD, MS, as the new Chair of the Division of Vascular Surgery. Dr. Rectenwald has been serving as a professor of vascular surgery at UW-Madison since 2018. Before his tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was the division chief of vascular surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern. Dr. Rectenwald’s educational background includes a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, general surgery training at the University of Florida, and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan. During his decade-long faculty tenure at the University of Michigan, he moved to UT Southwestern. Dr. Rectenwald is recognized for his leadership within several prestigious vascular surgery societies, including the Society of Vascular Surgery, the Midwest Vascular Society, and the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society. He holds the Susan Behrens, MD, Class of 1975 Surgery Education Chair and serves as the vice chair of education for the Department of Surgery. His contributions to surgical education have earned him national and local teaching awards, such as the Philip J. Wolfson Outstanding Teacher Award from the Association for Surgical Education in 2019.
