Sandra L. Wong has been appointed the next dean of Emory University School of Medicine and chief academic officer for Emory Healthcare. An accomplished surgical oncologist and researcher, she will join Emory in March 2024.
Dr. Sandra L. Wong, MD, MS, is a highly regarded surgical oncologist specializing in soft tissue sarcomas, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancers. She is currently the chair in the Department of Surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and serves as a professor of surgery at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Emory University President Gregory L. Fenves lauds Dr. Wong for her extensive experience and expertise. As a surgeon and academic leader, Dr. Wong has made significant contributions in saving lives, mentoring doctors, and working to eliminate health disparities in underserved populations. Her selection follows an extensive national search and she will succeed Carlos del Rio, who served as interim dean since January 2023.
Dr. Wong’s research is well-recognized in academic surgery, with over 250 peer-reviewed studies. She has held leadership roles in prominent professional organizations and serves on several editorial boards. Dr. Wong’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion will be integral to her role at Emory, where she will oversee a large community of faculty, residents, and students.
A native of Stockton, California, Dr. Wong completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of California Berkeley, an MD from Northwestern University Medical School, a surgical residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She has also held significant positions at the University of Michigan and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
