NYU Langone Health Names Justin S. Brandt, MD, Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

26 Mar, 2023

Justin S. Brandt, MD, a nationally recognized specialist in managing high-risk pregnancies, has joined NYU Langone Health as director of the Division of Maternal–Fetal Medicine in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Also named associate professor in the department, Dr. Brandt joins the institution from Robert Wood Johnson—Barnabas Health, where he served as director of performance improvement and quality assurance in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, director of obstetric ultrasound, and associate professor at Rutgers’ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“Each year, more than 15,000 babies are born throughout the NYU Langone system, and there are times when specialized care is needed during some of these pregnancies,” said Dana R. Gossett, MD, the Stanley H. Kaplan Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Maternal–fetal medicine is an integral part of obstetric care, and I’m thrilled to have a nationally known expert like Dr. Brandt leading our team. I am confident he will continue to help ensure the best possible outcomes for pregnant people and their babies that require high-risk care at NYU Langone.”

While Dr. Brandt’s proficiency is widespread in managing the health and wellbeing of pregnant people and their babies during high-risk pregnancies, he has particular interest in providing obstetric services for transgender people and people with diverse gender identities.

“I am dedicated to providing evidence-based, comprehensive, and inclusive care and am thrilled to join NYU Langone as the new director of maternal–fetal medicine,” said Dr. Brandt. “While most of the care obstetrician–gynecologists provide for people with diverse gender identities is routine, gender-expansive individuals have unique needs. I’m committed to ensuring that all people with birthing potential have access to affirming high-risk care in our practice and beyond.”

Dr. Brandt replaces Ashley S. Roman, MD, who in December 2021 became vice chair for clinical affairs—obstetrics in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and service chief for obstetrics at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital.

About NYU Langone Health:

Each year, we are recognized for providing outstanding care. NYU Langone Health has earned a five-star rating for safety, quality, and patient experience from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

At NYU Langone, we emphasize treating the whole person and not simply the disease. We are renowned for evidence-based clinical care across a wide array of specialties, including cardiac and vascular carecancer, inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal care—including orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation—and a host of specialty children’s services at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital.

Our exceptional physicians are named on Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors.” Our nurses are also recognized for excellence in the care they provide, receiving Magnet® status for the fourth consecutive time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Magnet® status is an honor achieved by only 9.4 percent of hospitals in the United States.

For the past nine years, NYU Langone has also received top rankings for overall patient safety and quality of care from Vizient, Inc. In 2022, NYU Langone was recognized as the top performer in the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Annual Ranking for demonstrating high quality and safety performance.

For the last eight years, our faculty group practice network has been top ranked among participating medical centers nationwide. In 2022, NYU Langone ambulatory care practices ranked No. 1 in Vizient’s Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Ranking for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality outpatient care.

In addition, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island were each awarded an “A” Hospital Safety Grade in the fall 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction that recognizes NYU Langone’s achievement in providing the highest level of patient care across the health system and an honor attained by only 29 percent of hospitals across the country.

We are proud to be ranked No. 3 in the country on U.S. News & World Report’s  “Best Hospitals” ranking. U.S. News & World Report  has also named us among the top 10 hospitals in the country for specialties including cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; psychiatry; pulmonology and lung surgery; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.
