Wayne State University names David Bryant Jr., M.D., chair of WSU Obstetrics and Gynecology

David Bryant Jr., M.D., has been named the Frank P. Iacobell Endowed chair of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His appointment is effective Sept. 1.

Dean Wael Sakr, M.D., announced the appointment Aug. 19.

Dr. Bryant, an associate professor of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and member of the WSU faculty since 1995, is the interim director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and chief of Obstetrics for Hutzel Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Bryant has a long affiliation with the department, both as a faculty member and as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow. He has extensive experience in the field, having served as co-director of the Eleanor Hutzel Recovery Clinic, medical director of the Southfield Obstetrics and Gynecology Office, a staff physician with Wayne Health (and its forerunner, the Wayne State University Physician Group), medical director of Obstetrics for Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast and medical director of Obstetrics/Maternal-Fetal Medicine for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, and senior staff physician and medical director of the Maternal Special Care/Antenatal Unit at Henry Ford Hospital.

A board-certified diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialty certification, he is a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

He has extensive experience teaching and mentoring medical students, residents and fellows, and has received numerous awards for teaching and research mentorship.

Dr. Bryant received his bachelor’s degree in Integrated Life Science from Kent State University in 1987, and his medical degree from the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine in 1991. He completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in 1995, followed by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at WSU in 1997.

Dr. Bryant replaces Stanley Berry, M.D., who has served as interim chair of the department since March 2021.

About David Bryant Jr., M.D.: 

Dr. Bryant graduated from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio with departmental honors in biological sciences and from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at William Beaumont Hospital winning the Harold Longyear Award for the most outstanding graduating resident. He then completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Wayne State University/Hutzel Woman’s Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. After completing subspecialty medical training in 1997, he was an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Ohio, a senior staff physician at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and Director of Obstetrics at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Currently, Dr. Bryant is an Associate Professor at Wayne State University/Hutzel Women’s Hospital, the Chief of Obstetrics for the Detroit Medical Center, and the Interim Division Director for Maternal-Fetal Medicine for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His clinical activities cover the breadth and depth of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. His main clinical interests include labor and delivery care of both normal and high-risk pregnancies, operative vaginal delivery, and the clinical care of maternal medical conditions, especially maternal diabetes and opioid use disorder. He particularly enjoys teaching residents and fellows in the clinical setting. Since 2016, he has been presented with the Carl Christensen Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching, the Clinical Attending of the Year, the Outstanding Research Award, and the Sidney Bottoms, MD Award for Excellence in Research Mentorship.
