On Jan. 2 2017 Geisinger Health System received necessary approvals and finalized contracts to add a medical school. Negotiation terms have been going on since September of 2016.
The medical school, which has been renamed Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, has been around since 2008 in Scranton, PA., and has campuses in Sayre, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport, PA. Over the years, it has presented more than 250 doctor of medicine degrees and 300 master biomedical science degrees since the first class in 2013.
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is one of three Pennsylvania medical schools outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Steven J. Scheinman, MD, will be wearing two hats being considered as the new chief academic officer and executive vice president at Geisinger Health System while maintaining his current role as president and dean of the medical school.
