Precision medicine and technology

06 Sep, 2016

Precision medicine is transforming healthcare delivery, but is still only one type of cutting-edge technology in a constantly innovating field. To produce optimal results, precision medicine must smoothly interact with the other technologies available in medicine.

Due to its novelty and at times experimental-nature, precision medicine has largely remained within large organizations with research activities. According to a report done by HIMSS Analytics, fewer than one-third of healthcare providers polled pursue precision medicine initiatives. Those that do have precision medicine initiatives included most often academic medical centers (35%), multi-hospital health systems (25%), and large providers with more than 500 beds (41%). Limits in funding, technology, and expertise has restricted precision medicine to large medical institutions.

Crucial to the implementation of precision medicine in more clinical settings is the integration of clinical data systems and precision medicine. According to a poll completed by Healthcare IT News with 137 professionals at academic medical centers, health systems, and standalone hospitals, the following are four key fronts on which precision medicine integration can shape technology offerings:

Electronic health records – In order for precision medicine to grow, there will need to be a clear way to integrate it with EHRs.

Population health management platforms – Because many healthcare organizations have population health initiatives, precision medicine could be particularly valuable when evaluating environmental data and implementing disease management projects.

Clinical analytics tools – Precision medicine will push clinical and business intelligence tools to grow in sophistication.

Vendor partnerships with professional organizations – As the prevalence of precision medicine grows, healthcare organization’s strong relationships with IT companies focusing on precision medicine will be crucial.
