Medical Director of Transplant Hepatology – Tulane University

Position Specifics
The Tulane Transplant Institute seeks a dynamic transplant hepatologist to lead the expansion of the liver transplant program at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country. The successful Medical Director will have the opportunity to build Tulane’s already well established liver transplant program (3 txpt hepatologists, 3 txpt surgeons) into one of the nation’s preeminent destinations for liver transplantation.

Recently, the COM Dean and the CEO of the Health System have identified the expansion of the liver transplant program as one of their top strategic priorities. Additionally, the Chair of Medicine (a gastroenterologist) and the Chair of Surgery (a transplant surgeon) have formalized their support for this initiative through their joint recruitment of Dr. Hoonbae Jeon as Surgical Director of Liver Transplant in early 2018. As such, the incoming medical director will have significant resources and enterprise-wide support for program building. The ideal candidate will be an excellent clinician, board certified/eligible in transplant hepatology, and eager to build the hepatology and liver transplant services. Prior leadership experience preferred but not required.

Required Qualifications
Qualified applicants must possess an MD, DO, or equivalent and must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Louisiana. Additional qualifications include ABIM board certification or board eligibility in Transplant Hepatology.

Liver Transplant and Living-Donor Program

Liver transplant has been performed at Tulane with great success since 1997, continuing to grow each year with outstanding results that exceed the national average. The Liver Transplant and Living-Donor Program at the Tulane Transplant Institute combines compassionate and cutting-edge medical care with advanced surgical techniques and innovative surgical research. Both living-donor and cadaveric liver transplants are available through the Tulane Transplant Institute.

Non-Transplant Liver & Biliary Surgery
Our expertise and technology extend well beyond transplant as our surgical staff are highly trained hepatobiliary surgeons, performing over 50 liver and bile duct surgeries each year. Our multidisciplinary team provides our patients with many options for treating their tumor whether in the operating room or the radiology suite. We have the most up-to-date therapies available for our patients including advanced minimally invasive procedures, chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation, and stereotactic radiation implants among others.

Tulane Liver Disease Management Program
The Tulane Liver Disease Management Program at Tulane Transplant Institute provides physicians and their patients with an effective approach to diagnosis and treatment of early stage liver dysfunction and/or failure. Our comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment of liver disease, both adult and pediatric, provides a full spectrum of services in a holistic setting. Our team approach to treatment works effectively across scientific and clinical disciplines to produce optimum treatment outcomes.

Tulane Transplant Institute

Our state-of-the-art, dedicated clinic and inpatient unit allow for streamlined, multidisciplinary care of our patients. And cutting-edge technologies – such as the FibroScan alternative to traditional liver biopsies – provide treatment and management options not available at many transplant centers.

Tulane Abdominal Transplant Clinic
The Tulane Abdominal Transplant Clinic is located on the 6th floor of Tulane Medical Center. It has a spacious waiting area, state-of-the-art exam rooms, and multi-purpose rooms which are used for meeting with the transplant social workers, financial coordinators, dietitians, nurses and doctors, or for viewing educational videos with ease, comfort, and privacy. The Clinic includes two state-of-the-art procedure rooms which are used to perform biopsies, remove Port-a-caths, and perform other routine procedures. There is a large infusion room, complete with lounge chairs and individual televisions, where our patients can receive intravenous therapy in comfort.

Tulane Abdominal Transplant Unit (TATU)
The Tulane Abdominal Transplant Unit (TATU), located on the 7th floor of Tulane Medical Center, consists of 18 beds—all, private rooms with a private bath and shower. The unit can accommodate patients needing intensive care as well as those who are less acutely ill. Therefore, our patients do not have to move throughout the hospital during their recovery; transplant patients will stay on the TATU throughout their hospitalization.

The TATU caters to all transplant patients: kidney, liver, pancreas, as well as readmission for any transplant patient with either transplant or non-transplant-related medical issues.

The TATU nurses are specially trained, educated, and oriented to the particular needs of the transplant population. They undergo an intensive educational program dedicated to the care of the transplant patient. There is also a nurse practitioner on the TATU who collaborates with the transplant physicians to provide the best care possible for every transplant patient.
