The MedStar Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Washington, D.C., is seeking an accomplished and visionary Medical Director for the Leukemia Program. This leadership role provides a unique opportunity for a board-certified/board-eligible Hematologist/Oncologist with expertise in Leukemia to lead and expand the program across MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the MedStar Health system.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of nationally recognized experts in Lymphoma, Myeloma, Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation, and Cellular Therapy, all working together within a highly supportive environment. This position offers outstanding clinical, research, and academic opportunities, including collaboration with Hackensack Meridian Health’s John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC), the NCI consortium partner for Georgetown. This partnership provides access to a large, diverse patient population and robust resources for clinical trials, translational research, and Phase I studies, supporting the development of cutting-edge treatments for leukemia patients.

Position Overview

The Medical Director of the Leukemia Program will lead all aspects of the Leukemia Disease Group, including clinical operations, programmatic development, clinical trials, and research initiatives. The primary objective is to further expand and elevate the established leukemia program, transforming it into a destination site for leukemia care and innovation within the MedStar Health system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the development, growth, and vision of the Leukemia Program, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, research, and education.
  • Collaborating with JTCC to advance clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, and translational research across the NCI consortium.
  • Partnering with BMT/Cell Therapy, Lymphoma, and Myeloma teams to create seamless, multidisciplinary care pathways for leukemia patients.
  • Expanding clinical and translational research efforts, including Phase I trials and access to advanced therapies such as CAR-T cell therapy and other novel cellular treatments.
  • Utilizing the state-of-the-art NGS platform for precision diagnostics and personalized treatment strategies in both clinical care and research.
  • Developing and mentoring a team of advanced practice providers, clinical and research nurses, and support staff dedicated to the leukemia and hematologic malignancies programs.
  • Engaging in teaching and mentorship for hematology/oncology fellows, medical students, and residents affiliated with Georgetown University School of Medicine.

This position also offers the opportunity to shape the future of leukemia care across MedStar Health’s expansive network of 10 hospitals and hundreds of ambulatory sites throughout the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. regions.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished physician-leader with expertise in leukemia and a passion for advancing patient care, research, and education.

Required qualifications include:

  • MD, MD/PhD, DO, or equivalent degree required.
  • Board certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.
  • Fellowship training in Hematologic Malignancies, with specific expertise in leukemia.
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post-fellowship, with demonstrated leadership experience preferred.
  • A strong record of clinical excellence, peer-reviewed publications, and clinical trial participation.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary cancer care environment.
  • Commitment to advancing patient-centered care, education, and health equity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Leadership experience within an academic medical center or NCI-designated cancer center.
  • Prior experience in developing or leading a Leukemia Program, including clinical, research, and administrative components.
  • An interest in advancing precision oncology, NGS-based diagnostics, and novel therapeutics.
  • Experience with clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, and translational research in leukemia.
