Dr. Eric J. DeMaria Takes the Helm as Chief of Surgery at ECU Health and Brody School of Medicine
Dr. Eric J. DeMaria has been named ECU Health’s Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery for the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, effective September 1. Dr. DeMaria is a nationally recognized expert in bariatric and metabolic surgery with over 30 years of experience in academic surgery.
“I am honored to join ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine,” said DeMaria. “I look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff to advance surgical care and education in eastern North Carolina.”
Dr. DeMaria comes from Bon Secours Mercy Health System in Richmond, Virginia, where he served as the Chief of Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Director of the Advanced Weight Loss Center. He has held leadership positions in several national and international surgical societies, including serving as the President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
“Dr. DeMaria brings a wealth of experience and a national reputation in surgery to ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine,” said Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO of ECU Health and Dean of the Brody School of Medicine. “His leadership and expertise will be invaluable as we continue to provide high-quality surgical care and train the next generation of surgeons.”
Dr. DeMaria received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He has published extensively in the field of bariatric surgery and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.
