Position Summary

Houston Methodist Hospital, the flagship of one of the nation’s premier academic health systems and a nine-time U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll hospital (seven consecutive years), is seeking a visionary neurovascular leader to serve as the next Director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center and the Cerebrovascular Division within the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute. This is a rare opportunity to lead an established, nationally recognized stroke program housed within the largest dedicated stroke unit in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world.

Reporting to the Chair of the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology, the Director will lead and grow the Division’s clinical, academic, and research missions. The Director will hold operational and strategic oversight of the Eddy Scurlock Comprehensive Stroke Center, including its 27-bed inpatient stroke unit, outpatient cerebrovascular clinics, the TeleStroke program, carotid duplex and neurosonology services, the ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship, and the Division’s clinical-trials portfolio.

In close partnership with department leadership and the broader Neurological Institute, the Director will help shape the strategic direction of cerebrovascular care across the Houston Methodist system, expand investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials, recruit and develop faculty, and mentor the next generation of vascular neurologists. Position Specifics

Key Responsibilities

The Director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center and the Cerebrovascular Division will be accountable for the clinical, academic, operational, and quality performance of the stroke program at Houston Methodist’s flagship academic medical center, with a multi-faceted leadership portfolio:

• Clinical Leadership: Provide direct vascular neurology care across the inpatient stroke unit and outpatient cerebrovascular clinics. Lead the Division’s clinical service line strategy and ensure exceptional patient care, service quality, and outcomes.
• Stroke Center Certification & Quality: Hold ultimate accountability for maintenance and continued advancement of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center certifications from DNV Healthcare and The Joint Commission, as well as the program’s sustained recognition in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines and Target: Stroke quality programs.
• TeleStroke Program: Provide strategic oversight of the system’s TeleStroke program, in partnership with the TeleStroke Director, to deliver acute stroke coverage and consultation across Houston Methodist’s regional partner hospitals.
• Education & Training: Lead the academic mission of the Division, including the ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship and stroke training for neurology residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff.
• Research & Clinical Trials: Grow the Division’s clinical and translational research portfolio. Serve as a senior investigator or facilitator on multicenter and investigator-initiated cerebrovascular trials. Partner with the Houston Methodist Research Institute, neurosurgery, neuro-interventional radiology, and neurocritical care colleagues to expand cross-disciplinary stroke research.
• Faculty Development & Recruitment: Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain a high-performing faculty. Build career pathways for junior faculty and create the conditions for them to do their best clinical and academic work.
• Strategic Planning & Program Growth: Work with the Chair of Neurology and Neurological Institute leadership to set the strategic direction for the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center and the Cerebrovascular Division and strengthen the program’s standing as a national destination for cerebrovascular care. In partnership with system leadership, contribute to Houston Methodist’s broader stroke strategy, including acute stroke pathways, TeleStroke coverage models, outcomes dashboards, and regional referral relationships, alongside resource allocation, capital planning, program expansion, and the philanthropic and institutional partnerships that support endowed leadership, research innovation, and program growth.
• National Visibility: Represent Houston Methodist in national and international cerebrovascular forums, including professional societies (AAN, AHA/ASA, SVIN, NCS), guideline and quality initiatives, multicenter trials, and academic collaborations.
• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Build and maintain strong working relationships with the Department of Neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, neurocritical care, cardiology, emergency medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and stroke nursing leadership to deliver a fully integrated stroke care model.

Required Qualifications

• MD or MD/PhD from an accredited institution.
• Board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
• Board certified or board eligible in Vascular Neurology by the ABPN.
• Fellowship trained in Vascular Neurology, Cerebrovascular Disease, or equivalent advanced training.
• Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure and credentialing at Houston Methodist Hospital.
• Active clinician with the willingness and ability to take call and provide both inpatient and outpatient cerebrovascular care.
• Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or equivalent record sufficient to support appointment at that rank at Weill Cornell Medical College.
• Demonstrated track record of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications in cerebrovascular disease.

• Active vascular neurology practice with significant inpatient stroke and outpatient cerebrovascular experience, including acute stroke management, secondary prevention, and long-term follow-up.
• Comfort with neurosonology (transcranial Doppler, carotid duplex) and modern stroke neuroimaging interpretation is preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership in stroke quality, performance improvement, telestroke program development, or hyperacute stroke systems of care.

Academic & Research Profile

• Track record in clinical or translational research with senior- or first-author publications in stroke-related clinical trials, observational studies, imaging research, stroke prevention, or stroke systems of care.
• Experience as a site PI or sub-investigator on multicenter cerebrovascular trials is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to lead investigator-initiated studies is a strong differentiator.
• Extramural funding (NIH, AHA, foundation, or industry) is preferred but not required. Strong clinical-trials productivity and a clear scholarly trajectory will be valued equally.
• National recognition through AHA/ASA, AAN, SVIN, NCS, academic societies, guideline committees, multicenter trial networks, editorial boards, invited lectureships, or regional/national quality initiatives.
• Basic science investigators will also be considered when paired with strong clinical engagement and stroke focus, though the primary emphasis of this role is on clinical and translational research.
