Job Description

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a highly qualified Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Faculty member at the assistant professor, associate professor, or professor rank to join the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a Maternal Fetal Medicine Faculty member, you will:

  • Provide specialized care to high-risk obstetric patients across three physical locations.
  • Engage in teaching activities for medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Participate in clinical and/or basic science research, with opportunities for leadership roles in ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and outcomes.

Clinical Assignments

  • Hospital Service: Responsibilities include rounding on antepartum patients, consults, and procedures such as cerclage.
  • Center for Maternal and Fetal Care: Located on the ground floor of Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, this center is the only unit in Mississippi for advanced diagnosis and treatment of complicated pregnancies. It offers collaborative care between maternal-fetal medicine specialists and pediatric specialists and surgeons. The center provides a customized care team for each expectant mother, ensuring compassionate, individualized care. It is equipped with three GE Voluson Expert 22 ultrasound machines and uses AS Software for ultrasound reporting. The center partners with other fetal centers of excellence nationwide to ensure the highest level of specialized care.
  • Women’s Specialty Clinic: Located 4 miles from the University Hospital, this clinic houses MFM, Urogynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Pediatric Gynecology clinics. It features three ultrasound rooms for MFM, offering targeted ultrasound and maternal medical consultation in coordination with referring providers.
  • OB Gyn Clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall: Situated less than 2 miles from the main hospital, this clinic hosts resident subspecialty clinics. Faculty staff the OB High Risk clinic on Mondays and Thursdays, providing ultrasound and longitudinal prenatal care for high-risk women. The facility includes eight exam rooms and three ultrasound machines.

Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have:

  • MD/DO degree (or equivalent)
  • Successfully completed a 4-year ACGME accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program
  • Completed an ABOG recognized Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship program
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Eligible for Unrestricted Medical Licensure by the Mississippi State Medical Board

Research and Education Opportunities

  • Research: Faculty have opportunities to engage in research, coordinated through the department’s PhD and research coordinator. The department is actively hiring additional research nurses to support ongoing projects.

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM)

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is distinguished for its comprehensive care and academic excellence. As the only Level 4 referral perinatal center in Mississippi, the division manages approximately 3,000 deliveries annually, with 75% classified as high-risk. Our dedicated six-floor hospital focuses exclusively on the care of women and infants, handling 20,000 high-risk visits, 5,000 level II ultrasounds, including fetal echocardiography, and 300 invasive perinatal procedures each year.

The division is supported by a robust team of experts across various specialties, including Newborn Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Genetics, Radiology, and Anesthesia, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care and education. This multidisciplinary support enhances the exceptional educational opportunities available to our MFM fellows.

In addition to clinical excellence, the division is actively engaged in both clinical and basic science research. Key research areas include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, prematurity, and maternal-fetal physiology. Our collaboration with departments such as Physiology and Pharmacology strengthens our basic science foundation. The division benefits from excellent research support provided by the dedicated Research & Academic Affairs Division within the Department of OB-GYN.

Currently, we are involved in multiple funded clinical projects aimed at improving the prediction, detection, and management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and enhancing therapeutic decision-making to positively impact perinatal outcomes.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) offers a comprehensive Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship Program, accredited to train two fellows per year, with a total of six fellows in the program at any given time. This program is designed to provide fellows with extensive clinical and research training in high-risk obstetrics, ensuring they gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of maternal-fetal medicine.

Clinical Training
Fellows participate in a variety of rotations that include:

  • Antenatal Diagnostic Unit and Mirror Lake Specialty Clinic: Fellows perform supervised antenatal diagnostic ultrasound examinations and procedures. They are trained in fetal echocardiography and multiple perinatal invasive procedures, gaining extensive experience with ultrasound by the end of the fellowship.
  • Antepartum Service: Fellows manage a busy and complex antepartum service, providing exposure to a wide range of disease processes. This rotation offers valuable teaching opportunities as fellows work closely with residents.
  • Center for Maternal & Fetal Care: Fellows assist MFM staff in performing ultrasounds and formulating care plans for pregnancies complicated by fetal anomalies.
  • Outpatient MFM Clinic: Fellows gain experience functioning as a partner in a private clinic setting, providing care and consultations.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship program places a strong emphasis on research, with fellows dedicating significant time to research activities:

  • Laboratory Techniques: Fellows become acquainted with techniques such as small animal surgery, protein isolation, real-time PCR, chemiluminescence, and cell culturing.
  • Research Development: Fellows engage in grant writing, protocol conception, and research design. They are expected to present a first-authored project at a national meeting and have a paper accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal during or shortly after the fellowship.
  • Master’s Degree: The research component is designed to support fellows in completing a master’s degree and defending their thesis by the end of the second year.

Maternal Health Research Hub: Delta Mississippi Center of Excellence in Maternal Health

UMMC is a key collaborator in the Delta Mississippi Center of Excellence in Maternal Health, part of the NIH-funded Implementing a Maternal Health and Pregnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) Initiative. This initiative, with a total investment of $168 million, aims to improve maternal health outcomes nationwide. The Delta Mississippi Center of Excellence, supported by an initial $2.5 million investment, focuses specifically on enhancing maternal health in the Mississippi Delta region. UMMC’s partnership with Jackson State University enhances research capabilities and promotes maternal health equity.

Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants

Wiser Hospital at UMMC is the primary referral site for the most complicated obstetrical and gynecologic patients and houses the only dedicated women’s emergency/urgent care unit in Mississippi.

Center for Maternal and Fetal Care

UMMC’s Center for Maternal and Fetal Care offers the support of a variety of specialists who form a customized care team based on each expectant mother’s unique needs, ensuring compassionate, individualized care for pregnancies and births that might need extra attention – all under one roof.

The center, located on the ground floor of Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, has the largest group of maternal-fetal subspecialists in the state as well as a comprehensive team of pediatric subspecialists and support services. Our center uses leading-edge technology to diagnose and manage unique and complicated pregnancies, all in a caring environment focused on the expectant mother and her unborn baby. The Center for Maternal and Fetal Care partners with other fetal centers of excellence across the country to ensure that each individual receives the highest level of specialized care.

As a part of Children’s of Mississippi, our center provides seamless continuity of care from delivery through infancy, even into childhood. Children’s of Mississippi includes the state’s only hospital devoted to caring for children of all ages.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UMMC provides first-rate care to women and is a leader in education and research in the region. The department encompasses several divisions, including:

  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Urogynecology
  • Women’s Health

The department’s residency program is recognized as one of the finest in the region, training the majority of obstetricians and gynecologists in Mississippi. The University of Mississippi Medical Center
