Training occurs across UMMC’s flagship hospitals on the Jackson campus—University Hospital, Children’s of Mississippi, Winfred L. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, and the Conerly Critical Care Hospital—with additional experience at the on-campus VA and Methodist Rehabilitation Hospital. The internal medicine residency encompasses roughly 120 trainees annually (including 78 categorical, a primary care track, Med-Peds, and prelim interns), with 24 categorical positions offered each Match. Daily attending rounds and a strong fellowship ecosystem—anchored by an ACGME-accredited Infectious Diseases fellowship—create a rigorous environment for clinician-educators and clinician-investigators.

University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is Mississippi’s only academic health science center and is a national leader in healthcare education, research, and patient care.  With 1,003 beds across seven hospitals and more than 35 clinics, UMMC delivers the state’s most advanced specialty care, including the only Level I adult trauma center, the only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit, the state’s only children’s hospital, and Mississippi’s only programs for organ and bone marrow transplantation. UMMC’s six health science schools—Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Health Related Professions, Graduate Studies, and Population Health—educate more than 3,000 students annually. The School of Medicine, founded in 1955, anchors the campus with a mission to train a diverse, skilled, and compassionate physician workforce while advancing biomedical knowledge and improving healthcare delivery. Its programs are nationally recognized in fields such as radiology, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, and anesthesiology, and it is the home of Mississippi’s only academic residency and fellowship training programs across numerous specialties, including Infectious Diseases.

UMMC employs more than 10,000 faculty and staff, with a $2 billion annual budget that accounts for approximately 10% of the Jackson metro economy and 2% of the state’s economy. University Physicians, the faculty practice group of the School of Medicine, includes approximately 700 physicians who provide care on campus, throughout the Jackson metro area, and in outreach clinics across the state.

The Medical Center is also home to one of only two nationally designated Telehealth Centers of Excellence, extending access to care through over 200 telehealth sites statewide. In addition, UMMC operates community hospitals in Grenada and Holmes County, strengthening its role as a truly statewide system of care. Guided by its mission to eliminate health disparities related to race, geography, income, and social status, UMMC continues to expand in all aspects of its tripartite mission: education, research, and patient care.
