Position Overview

Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) seeks a nationally distinguished, academically accomplished GI Medical Oncologist to serve as Chief of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC), based at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).

The Chief of GI Oncology will lead strategic growth across clinical care, research, faculty recruitment, and programmatic development—advancing JTCC’s GI division to national prominence.

The Opportunity: Chief of GI Oncology

GI Oncology represents a major strategic priority for continued expansion and national elevation.

The Chief will be responsible for:

Clinical Leadership

  • Overseeing and growing the GI Medical Oncology division
  • Expanding subspecialty disease programs (colorectal, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, upper GI, neuroendocrine, etc.)
  • Enhancing multidisciplinary integration with surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, interventional GI, and radiology
  • Driving quality metrics and clinical excellence initiatives

Research & Academic Development

  • Increasing GI-focused clinical trial accrual
  • Advancing translational research initiatives
  • Strengthening alignment with consortium-based NCI research priorities
  • Publishing and maintaining national academic visibility
  • Supporting mentorship of junior faculty and fellows

Faculty Recruitment & Program Growth

  • Recruiting additional GI oncology faculty aligned with growth strategy
  • Building disease-focused centers of excellence within GI malignancies
  • Elevating the national reputation of JTCC’s GI division

Administrative Leadership

  • Partnering with the Physician-in-Chief and Cancer Center leadership on strategic planning
  • Overseeing divisional quality metrics, research compliance, and academic productivity
  • Representing JTCC at institutional and national meetings

This role provides meaningful leadership authority and the institutional support required to build a nationally recognized GI Oncology program.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • MD or DO from an accredited institution
  • Board Certification in Medical Oncology (ABIM)
  • Eligibility for New Jersey medical licensure
  • Established expertise in GI malignancies
  • Record of peer-reviewed scholarship and academic productivity
  • Experience in clinical trials and/or translational research
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a division, section, or programmatic role
  • National presence or trajectory toward national prominence
