Position Overview
Infirmary Health, the largest non-governmental health system in Alabama, in collaboration with the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, seeks an accomplished physician leader to serve as Cancer Center Director. This is an extraordinary opportunity to lead a regionally dominant oncology program that is both highly integrated and rapidly expanding, while shaping the future of cancer care for nearly two million people across southern Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle.
The Director will build upon Infirmary’s strong foundation—one of the Gulf South’s largest oncology programs—and guide the program into its next era of growth, visibility, and impact. Through a formal affiliation with the UAB O’Neal CCC—one of only 72 NCI-designated centers in the U.S., and the only such center within a four-state radius—patients across the Gulf Coast gain access to world-class cancer care, clinical trials, and academic resources close to home.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Growth

Lead Infirmary Cancer Care’s continued growth as the preeminent cancer program in the Gulf South.

Recruit across medical, surgical, and radiation oncology specialties, expanding physician and staff capacity to meet growing demand.

Oversee the planning and development of a new flagship 100,000 sq. ft. cancer center on the Mobile Infirmary campus.

Advance Infirmary’s five regional cancer sites across Mobile and Baldwin counties, ensuring consistent quality and access.
Clinical & Program Development
-
Champion multidisciplinary, integrated cancer care across medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, infusion therapy, and survivorship programs.

Strengthen clinical trial participation in collaboration with UAB O’Neal CCC, ensuring patients have access to cutting-edge therapies without leaving the region.

Develop subspecialty programs in malignant hematology, GU/GYN oncology, genetics, palliative care, and thoracic/head & neck oncology.
Collaboration & Partnerships

Deepen ties with UAB O’Neal CCC, including joint physician recruitment, research integration, and shared quality standards.

Expand referral networks and cultivate relationships with regional providers to reduce outmigration to out-of-state centers such as MD Anderson and Moffitt.

Strengthen community education, screening, and prevention initiatives to reduce cancer disparities in the Gulf Coast population.
Research, Quality & Accreditation

Expand ICC’s clinical trials portfolio—already among the largest in the region—leveraging the UAB partnership to broaden eligibility and accruals.

Lead accreditation efforts, including the Commission on Cancer and disease-specific accreditations (e.g., NAPBC for breast cancer).

Ensure the delivery of measurable, value-based outcomes and continuous improvement in patient experience.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications

M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree; board certification in a cancer-related specialty (medical oncology preferred, though surgical and radiation oncologists with leadership experience will be considered).

Proven record of oncology program leadership, preferably in a hybrid community-academic environment.

Demonstrated success in physician recruitment, clinical integration, and strategic growth.

Strong collaborator with the ability to bridge academic and community oncology cultures.

ICC offers integrated services in medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, infusion therapy, palliative care, and support programs. Infirmary Health Department of Oncology
The Department of Oncology at Infirmary Health is a multidisciplinary division that spans across the system’s hospitals and outpatient clinics, ensuring seamless cancer care delivery. The department includes expert teams in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, supported by specialists in pathology, radiology, pharmacy, genetics, palliative care, and clinical research. The department works in tandem with the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and actively participates in clinical trial programs, quality initiatives, and community outreach.
